Catch up

Hello, hello! I can’t believe it’s been 11 days since my last post. I went to Florida last week for a business trip, and it’s taken me a few days to get back into my normal routine. My husband went along too, and while most of it was all work for me, we did get in a little play in the evenings.

I sure love the beach. :)

And as being on the coast goes, there was seafood a plenty to sample. We had several amazing meals of shrimp, crab legs and fresh fish. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water. Yum!

I may have indulged a little too much, because when I weighed in at my doctor’s appointment on Monday, I was up quite a bit from my visit a month ago. The nurse even did a double take with me when the dreaded number popped up on the scale. Let me tell you, that really does wonders for the old self esteem! Ha ha!

The nurse practitioner did make me feel a bit better, saying that my seemingly huge weight gain was likely because the baby just went through a big growth spurt. My uterus has grown about 7 centimeters since my last appointment. Whoa, baby!

I think it was good for me to get a bit of a reality check though, because I’ve been a lot more careful this week about watching what I eat. Sure, the baby may have had some to do with the weight gain, but I know at least a few pounds of that was my own fault. While I’ve been making good choices for the most part throughout my pregnancy, I think eating too much has had a big role in me packing on pounds.

While I’m still in the range of the recommended 25-35 pound pregnancy weight gain, I am bordering on going over that. And I still have 14 weeks left until my due date. I’m not getting too worked up about it, and neither is my doctor. All my labs look great and my blood pressure is fine, but I am refocusing on eating as well as possible and getting in good workouts every week.

So I’ve pulled the measuring cups back out, and we stocked up on all sorts of healthy eats for the week. Earthfare just opened in our area, and it is amazing! JD and I went in to look around and left with a whole cart full of organic goods. I could have spent my whole paycheck.

Breakfasts this week have included these old favorites:

Yogurt bowls! This morning’s “mess” was strawberry Chobani, about half a cup of organic blueberries and a cup of Kashi berry cereal. Fresh, filling and delish!

The husband also made us some awesome healthy smoothies with plain yogurt and lots of fruit for breakfast and as a quick snack. Liquid goodness can go a long way. Salads, sweet potatoes and fruit have been staples in my lunchbox the past few days.

It feels good to be cooking dinners again too. Eating out when your on a trip, even when you try to make good choices, can have a lot of hidden calories. Tonight’s meal was one of my favs — taco salad.

On a bed of iceberg lettuce was a half a cup of organic, grass-fed ground beef, a couple spoons of fat-free refried beans, a mix of corn, Rotel tomatoes, cilantro and purple onion, a sprinkle of shredded cheese, a few slices of avocado, a couple of small black olives and two tablespoons of lowfat plain yogurt. Plus a few dabs of salsa and a couple of organic blue corn chips for dipping.

Can’t wait to have this again for lunch!

After dinner, JD and I leashed up Tex and went for a 2-mile power walk. My legs were burning by the end of it, and it felt really good to get moving.

This post has taken me forever to write, due to the fact that I had to take a break because our cat rolled in mud, and we had to figure out how to wash her without getting ripped to shreds. My husband had to hold her by the scruff under the shower head while I wiped her down with a washcloth. (We were both wearing gloves, thankfully.) I wish I had a picture…Piper is fine, just pissy now! Ha ha!

I hope you all have a fantastic rest of the week. Anyone else have a 3-day weekend ahead?

Meg Makes It On Monday: Smoooothie

Monday, November 30th, 2009

So, I have a confession to make: I’m a pretty big bore when it comes to breakfast. Did you know this already? :)

If you keep up with my blog, you know I ♥ my yogurt bowls. About 99 percent of the time, my bag of eats that I take to work every day consists of: a banana, a Tupperware of Kashi GoLean cereal and a container of Chobani yogurt. It’s a great blend of protein and carbs and quick to put together when you stay in bed too long like I tend to do. But if variety is the spice of life, I think my a.m. meals need a big heaping spoon dash of salt! :)

So, I decided to be a bit of a copycat and try something I’ve seen on many blogs I read — a protein-packed smoothie. I was a bit hesitant — would thickish liquid truly fill me up? Would I be hungry 20 minutes later and attack the snack machine? Could I go a morning without my beloved Chobani? I’ve had smoothies before, but usually they were the chocolate variety that has a day’s worth of calories in, oh, a couple sips. :) But, no worries. My green-tinted shake kept my tummy full and snarky hunger monster in timeout until lunch. And I may or may not have snuck my favorite yogurt in the mix. :)

Here’s the magic potion:

Eight tablespoons organic Living Harvest Hemp Protein powder

Two more-brown-than-yellow bananas

Two cups Silk soy milk. Regular or Hemp milk could also be used.

Two handfuls of spinach -- couldn't even taste it!

One container Chobani plain yogurt -- old habits die hard. :)

Throw everything into a blender

Done!

A bubbly breakfast delight!

I actually split this into two containers, so I have an extra for tomorrow. Calories equal about 385 for 15 ounces. Delish!

Off to watch “Four Christmases.” I’m a big fan of Reese Witherspoon, so I hope she doesn’t disappoint. :)

What’s your favorite smoothie flavor?
