Work in progress

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Hello, hello! Hope you all had a fantastic 4th o’ July weekend! Along with eating some great food, spending time with our families and shooting a few fireworks, JD and I spent the good part of our three days off getting stuff done in the girl’s nursery. My brother-in-law is an amazing painter, and offered to do the room for the low cost of a BBQ lunch. What a steal, right? So he and my sis — plus my nieces — came over Saturday to paint and hang out. Sarah brought over a huge bin of 0-3 month clothes, so we “awwed” our way through those, and I started the big job of washing everything, plus cutting tags off and laundering her new outfits. I think it was at least 5 loads, and I’m not even done yet! We are having two showers at the end of the month too, so I’m sure more dresses, onesies and footed PJ’s are on the way. She’ll be one well-dressed baby. :)

Did you get a sneak peak at the wall color in the picture? I absolutely love it. It goes beautifully with her bedding, and Terry did such a good job painting. There wasn’t a streak or bubble in sight.

I couldn’t get the best pictures since I didn’t have any natural light, but here’s another picture of the wall color. I’ll have to take some better ones in the daytime. I am absolutely in love with the birdhouse hanging in the corner! We are ordering a wall mural of a tree with birds flying around, and we thought this piece would be so cute with it.

We got the crib bedding washed and put on too. The toys and stuffed animals wanted to crash here for awhile until we find them a new pad. Ha ha!

I wish I could show you the wall art we made for her and hung over the changing table, but since it has her name on it, I’ll have to keep that piece a secret for a few more weeks. :)

The room is definitely a work in progress, but I’m so happy with the way it is turning out. I can’t wait to see it all finished!

It was back to work today, and the husband and I are exhausted after such a busy weekend. He fired up the grill for dinner, and I sauteed some fresh, organic spinach (good source of iron!) to go with our baja citrus chicken and sweet potato chips.

So good!

We took a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood after dinner. Tex was happy to get out and stretch his legs, as was his mom. :)

I’m off to finish cleaning up the kitchen and then it’s lights out for me. Hope you all have a great, healthy week!

Sugar strike

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Wow. The end of the weekend already? Mondays come way too soon sometimes. The husband and I had a pretty uneventful weekend, which was nice considering the next few months are going to be so busy. We did find the last piece of furniture for our baby’s nursery — a two-shelf cherry wood bookcase. It goes perfectly with the rest of the room, and we spent some time Saturday filling it with our childhood books, plus a few new ones we’ve bought for her over the past few months. One of my favorites is “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” I must have asked my parents to read that to me a million times! I hope she does the same. :) Now we just need some paint on the walls, a few pictures hung and we’ll be ready to go. I’ll share some photos when we get a little further along in our room project.

Getting the baby’s room ready was good therapy, since the past few days have been kind of tough for me. I had a glucose tolerance test on Wednesday, which is standard at 28 weeks of pregnancy. Basically, you gulp down a sugary drink, sit there for an hour and then get your blood drawn to make sure your glucose levels are normal. Well, I found out Friday mine came out abnormal, so tomorrow morning, I have to go in for a follow-up 3-hour test. The nurse said it is very common, could be a fluke, but they want to make sure I don’t have gestational diabetes. I have to say I was really surprised by it all, especially considering I eat right the majority of the time and make sure to get in exercise. But there are many factors, (family history, age, etc.) that can contribute to gestational diabetes, and luckily, it usually goes away after pregnancy. Of course my main concern is for the baby’s health and safety, and whatever the outcome of this test tomorrow, I know I will do whatever the doctor tells me to do to ensure she will be just fine. Stand on my head, eat bugs, whatever.

I’ve been keeping a keen eye on sugar grams and carbs in my meals the past couple days, and tried to make them more protein dense. Plus, I’ve swapped veggies for organic granola bars and things like that. Here’s a sampling of some of my eats:

Scrambled organic, cage-free eggs and nitrate-free turkey bacon. I got the bacon at Earthfare, and it is by far the best turkey variety I’ve had. And only 35 calories a slice!

Sesame tempeh slices on whole wheat bread, a spread of cream cheese and cucumber slices fresh from our garden. I really enjoyed this one. It reminded me of a sushi roll (mmm…sushi rolls….). Served on the side was mixed salad greens with a splash of vinaigrette.

I’m currently noshing on a turkey burger, with a side of organic baby carrots and a couple of tablespoons of garlic hummus. Yom, yom, yom. I stuck a Chobani yogurt in the freezer earlier today, so I may be able to have a little sweet treat after all. :) I’ve had several great sweat sessions on the elliptical, (even an early morning workout…whoah!) plus long walks and a little strength training. And of course a nap or two for good balance. Ha ha! Hopefully all my good efforts will help. Fingers and toes are crossed for a normal test tomorrow.

Hope you all had a terrific weekend!

Spring Forward?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Happy Sunday, guys! Did those of you who gained an hour enjoy the extra daylight today? JD and I completely forgot to change our clocks last night. So instead of springing forward out of bed this morning, we snoozed well past 10 a.m.! I haven’t slept that late in so long. We did have one busy weekend though, so maybe the extra few hours of sleep were just what we needed.

Friday night, we put the baby’s crib together. It actually took less time than the changing table! We have been researching mattresses, and will hopefully get one soon.

The nursery is coming along!

Saturday, we had several family members come over to celebrate this handsome man’s birthday:

I ♥ him!

JD’s birthday is actually Tuesday, but we decided to have the party a few days early. My sister, Sarah, came over with her family, and wow, does she look great! If you didn’t get a chance to read her second guest post, go do it. :) She has lost 8 pounds already…way to go, sis! I’m so proud of you!

I was so busy entertaining that I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of all the food. We had make-your-own subs with all kinds of meats, cheeses, breads and veggies to choose from, several varieties of chips and the husband’s top secret baked beans. JD picked the menu, and what the birthday man wants, he gets! :) He opted for cookies instead of a cake, so we had two flavors: cinnamon and caramel-filled chocolate chip. Mmmm…….

The poor “D” balloon broke. :(

We had such a nice time visiting with everyone! It was a great evening.

So that brings us to today: It was so close to lunchtime when JD and I woke up that we decided to skip breakfast food and dug right into the party leftovers. I ate way too many chips last night, so I banned myself from having any today. LOL!

This is a Boar’s Head lemon pepper chicken sandwich on an onion bun with cheddar and Gouda cheese, a thick slice of tomato, lettuce and a dollop of mayo and spicy mustard mixed together. I baked my sandwich in the oven until the meat was good and hot. (Eating unheated cold cuts is a no-no for pregnant women due to the risk of Listeria.) On the side was sliced cucumber and a crunchy dill pickle. Delish!

I kept the veggie momentum going at dinner tonight with a big stir fry made up of broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, asparagus and onion, plus a helping of pan-seared tofu for protein.

Served over rice and mixed with a little teriyaki sauce for extra punch. Twas fantastic!

I must go catch up on all of your blogs now before I head to bed. You’d think I’d be wide awake since I slept so long today, but my eyes are already starting to shut. Ha Ha! I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead!
