Fit for a Queen

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

We are hunkered down in the house today, due to the possible threat of these:

The weather has been the hot topic around the Southern region today, and tornadoes, hail and severe storms are predicted for our area until late this evening. We already had one big thunder and lightning show this morning, but right now, it is bright and sunny outside? Scratching my head over this one, but maybe this was what the calm before the big storm looks like. Good thing JD and I have a lot to do around the house to keep us busy, and I have several books that need to be finished! I am disappointed though, because we were going to get started on our baby registries today. That’s a FAIL, Mother Nature, big fail.

I woke up absolutely famished this morning, and craving pancakes. The husband kindly went to the grocery store for mix, (he’s the best!) and came back with about 5 bags of groceries. Gotta love him — he never returns from a market trip with just a single item! :)

While I jumped on the elliptical for a 30-minute workout, he started a Saturday meal fit for a king and queen!

Big pancakes with fresh, mashed-up blackberries mixed in, scrambled eggs, sausage and applewood bacon. I LOVED the pancakes — the blackberries made them sweet + tart!

We rarely have a big breakfast like this, so it was a nice treat! And I kept my portions in check to be full, but not stuffed. It’s all about moderation, right?

I still have strength training to do to round out my workout for today. My legs feel great after cardio, but I love the burn of squats and lunges! I think Denise Austin’s 20-minute prenatal strength training session will be the way to go today. I like having a guide so I know I’m doing enough reps. How about you? Do you like doing your own strength training routines, or do you use a video, podcast, etc.?

A few other things on my indoor Saturday to-do list:

  1. Clean, polish, scrub and vacuum our house
  2. Coax our cat out from under the bed so we can give her meds (she had surgery on Thursday and has to be on antibiotics for a week. I don’t know if anyone of you have ever had to give a cat medicine, but it usually involves lots of meowing, hissing, scratching and overall unpleasantness.)
  3. Keep an ear out for tornado sirens, or something that sounds like a train coming straight at us. Yikes!
  4. Finish season 4 of “The Office.” And possibly brave said weather to go get season 5. :)

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and for anyone with bad weather coming their way, be safe!

Breakfast and a show

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Good morning! I hope you are having a fantastic start to your Saturday. I actually see sun peeking through the windows, which makes my heart happy! It’s been so gray and gloomy around here — I was wondering if we’d ever see sunshine again.

I woke up early this morning, had a little devotional time and then fixed JD and I a healthy breakfast. My co-worker was eating a bagel yesterday, and ever since, I can’t stop thinking about having one! So last night, we went to Publix and found these:

Ever tried “The Alternative Bagel”? They are really tasty and have only 110 calories, 0 grams of fat, 7 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.* (A serving even has 10% calcium, which is important for moms to be!)  And, you get a hearty portion size — fits in the palm of my hand. The onion flavor rocks my tastebuds. :)

I also brought back an old friend this morning:

CHOBANI! The pineapple flavor is my absolute fav!

To complete my lovely a.m. meal, I added a tablespoon of onion and chive cream cheese to my bagel (yes, I will be brushing my teeth immediately after this onion overload — ha!), and sliced up an apple for JD and I to share.

Twas delicious!

I’m really looking forward to this afternoon. JD’s aunt called me last night and invited me to see “A Chorus Line” with her today. I haven’t seen a show in so long, and thought it was so nice of her to offer me her extra ticket.

Before the singing and dancing can commence, I have a few things to cross off my to-do list:

  • Clean the house
  • Get in a long workout
  • Start clearing out our guest room (which will soon be the nursery!)
  • Find the perfect card and gift for my sweet husband for Valentine’s Day
  • Probably nap, cause that’s usually a given these days.

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday! :)

* I was not paid or asked to endorse any of the products I talked about it today’s post.

Shopping fuel

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Good mornin’! Do you have big plans on this fine Saturday? The husband and I (when he finally gets his bones out of bed, that is) are going to do some shopping today for a very special person: my mom!

This gorgeous woman is having a birthday tomorrow, and only the perfect gift will do for one of my best friends! :) Luckily, my mom is a lady who knows what she wants, and has already dropped some hints on present ideas for us. I have to say, I am definitely just like her on that one (and in many other ways!) — my Christmas list had the exact link to a pair of boots I wanted, with color specified. Ha Ha!

I may have to do a little shopping for myself today as well. As pregnancy goes, my clothes are starting to get, well, snug. My shirts and jeans are fine, but a lot of my business pants are getting tight in the waist. They still zip and button, but I feel like I have a muffin top 24/7. I’ve read that this is perfectly normal at the stage I’m at in my pregnancy, so I’m going with it. :) Won’t be long until I’m browsing the maternity section…yay!

I figured I better eat a good breakfast that would get me through all this retail running around, so I made an amazing bowl of oats:

In the mix:

  • 1/2 each of organic oats, low-fat milk and water
  • dash of salt
  • one small banana
  • tablespoon of all-natural peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • Scoop of Living Harvest Hemp Protein Powder

So yummy, and I am super full! I also had a mug of plain tea, and my “horse” pill. Ha!

This huge green pill is my prenatal vitamin, and the white is a Vitamin D supplement. (I found out last year I was deficient in D.) I’m actually going to pick up a prescription for a new prenatal that has more D in it today, and they aren’t as big as these! :)

A nutritious morning meal!

I better get moving if I want to get in a workout before heading out to the mall. I think today is going to be Summer Sanders Prenatal Workout DVD. It’s a good one!

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Natural healing

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Hey, all! How’s your weekend going? I hope great! As for me, I’ve had a tough few days dealing with headaches. Argh! I’m trying not to take any medications, even though I’ve read Tylenol is safe for preggs like me, but I couldn’t reach my doctor yesterday to verify that. So I kept it natural with frozen bags of veggies on my head. Ha! The cold stuff didn’t work too well, so I just rested in a completely dark and quiet room, and eventually fell asleep. I think that must have done the trick, because today I’m feeling so much better! I hope it stays that way.

I woke up super early and hungry this morning, and gobbled down some peach Chobani yogurt while getting sucked into the show, “Disappeared.” Have you seen it? It’s about real missing persons cases. Very interesting, but so sad too! I can’t imagine what those families are going through.

I made a big breakfast a couple of hours later for me and the hubs. It was french toast drizzled with honey, pan-seared prosciutto and sliced pineapple. It was very filling, and I couldn’t finish it all. So delish though!

After some house sprucing and blog reading (have to catch up with all my fav ladies), I got my workout on with Denise Austin’s Fit and Firm Pregnancy DVD. I did the 20-minute cardio session, plus the 20-minute toning workout. It felt so good to get moving!

JD and I started preparing dinner before lunch. :) We decided to try a recipe for Italian-style pulled pork (we subbed beef since it was on sale) from a paperback slow cooker recipe book I picked up at the grocery store.

Can’t go wrong with Sandra Lee on the cover! :)

Tex was desperately hoping JD would drop a morsel of the meat he was cutting up on the floor. Ha Ha!

“Gimme some beef!”

Here’s what it looks like, with all the ingredients together. (Wish I could share the recipe, but don’t want to infringe on any copyright laws!) We’ve had it cooking for several hours now, and my mouth hasn’t stopped watering from all the scrumptious smells coming from the crockpot. Can’t wait to dig in later!

Lunch was simple but HOT!

I was in a noodle kind of mood, so I fixed a Lipton Pasta Sides (chicken flavor) and a salad with lots of hot salsa on top. And hot it was! My nose was running, and my tongue needed some serious extinguishing after a few bites. I mixed in a little sour cream to try to cool it down, but my mouth was still ablaze. An orange Popsicle and copious amounts of water did the trick. :)

JD and I are going to an auction in a bit with my parents. You can find some great deals at those! (Like the china cabinet I got for a steal a few months ago!)

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
