And the winner is…

July 27th, 2010

Thanks to everyone who entered my first giveaway! This was so much fun, and of course, I couldn’t have done it without the wonderful Andrea! I’m so glad you all loved her products as much as I do.

Just so you know I kept things fair, (ha ha) I numbered all the names in the order they were submitted, and entered the numbers into Random.org. And the winner is:

#2 — Ashley Cross!

She said:

“How fun and nice of her to help you with your first giveaway. I just love the The Lavery / Set of 50 Enclosure Cards/. I may buy them even if I don’t win.”

Congratulations, Ashley! I will give your e-mail address to Andrea, and she’ll get you those Lavery cards. :)

To everyone else, you can still get those cards and prints you want with a great perk. Andrea is offering free shipping for all you wonderful TPAW readers when you order by Aug. 31, 2010. Convo her on Etsy or e-mail her (BEFORE you place an order) at andrea.sandifer@yahoo.com, and mention this giveaway for the free shipping offer. Can she get any nicer? :)

***

I have so much to update you all on, but it will have to wait for another post. My doctor gave me strict orders today to do nothing and put my feet up and rest. :) I found out I’m already 1 cm dilated and 60 percent effaced! And I’m only 36 weeks tomorrow. This little girl may come earlier than we thought. JD and I are so excited, but of course, you never know what babies are going to do. We are, however, making sure our hospital bags are fully packed just in case. :)

Hope you all are having a great week!

Mural, mural on the wall

July 20th, 2010

I just wanted to stop in and post some pictures of our nursery mural. We received it in the mail yesterday, and JD and I spent about 3 hours last night cutting out the shapes, smoothing them out and putting them on the crib wall. We went to bed well past midnight, but it was so worth it! The room is turning out better than I had hoped. Just a few more items, and we’ll be done! Hope you enjoy. :)

We decided on the darker leaves so they would show up better on the wall

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my giveaway! Deadline is Tuesday, July 27.

My first giveaway!

July 20th, 2010

As you may know, I have a new-found devotion to Etsy. And from some of the comments I received on my last post, some of you do as well. :)

So I can’t even tell you how excited I was when Andrea contacted me last week and said she wanted to help me with my first giveaway! She is a ridiculously talented graphic designer with the cutest shop on said Etsy called Paper Republic. I personally ♥ the monogrammed enclosure and note cards — the “Anderson” and “Slate Thanks” are two of my favs — and she has a whole new set of prints that I think would look fantastic in any room.

And because she is so awesome, Andrea has agreed to give one lucky winner their choice of one item from her site! That’s right…YOU get to decide, peeps. All you have to do to enter this fabulous giveaway is visit her shop, come back to this post and leave a comment about which product you’d love to have as your very own. How easy is that?! Bloggers, if you mention this giveaway on your blogs, and let me know you did, I’ll count that as one entry as well.

I will randomly choose a winner Tuesday, July 27. That gives you a whole week to enter, and tell all of your friends and readers to do the same. :) I’ll even take more than one entry per person if you want to increase your chances with ol’ Lady Luck.

Many thanks to Andrea for sponsoring this giveaway! If you have any questions, please contact me at twopounds2@yahoo.com.

Best of luck, guys!

Six weeks

July 14th, 2010

That’s right people…I have a mere 6 weeks until my due date. I think JD and I have made major strides in the preparedness department, but of course, there still seems to be a million things left to check off the to-do list. It’s a little overwhelming, but there’s no law that says everything HAS to be done before the baby comes. Case in point: I keep having little panic-stricken conversations with the husband about finishing the nursery, and he kindly reminds me that she won’t even be sleeping in there for the first few months of her life. God bless him…I think he’d like his sane wife back soon. Ha ha!

I do think we will have the room done before baby girl arrives. (Especially since I think “nesting” has kicked in for me a bit early.) There are just a few little odds and ends now that need to be placed or hung. I ordered this wall mural from Etsy yesterday, and I am beyond excited to see this latest addition to the “birdie” paradise.

They even used the bedding we have for the pic -- it was meant to be. :)

Have you bought anything from Etsy before? I couldn’t believe the amazing stuff they had. Some people are so creative. I made a “C” in home ec, so you can probably guess how crafty I am (not). We had to make a pair of pajama pants, and I think mine fell apart the first time I washed them. Ok, I’m lying…they fell apart BEFORE I washed them. :)

So what about my eating and exercise plan? Well, it’s been up and down. My appetite is all over the place right now. Some days, I have to force myself to eat, and others, I’m shoveling food in my mouth faster than Joey Chestnut. I have been eating more dark greens, red meat and beans to up my iron count. I made a really good tomato, corn and black bean salsa last week that I will share in another post.

And with extra weight on and a baby cutting off my air supply by snuggling down on my diaphragm, it has been difficult for me to do more than a few slow elliptical workouts or walks a week. But that’s still an effort, and with aching legs, no sleep at night, swelling like a blueberry and insane hot flashes, I’m pretty proud of myself for that.

I thought for sure when I found out I was pregnant that I would continue to count calories, and work out six days a week and become preggo of the year by the end of it. But as I’ve said before, I quickly learned that carrying a child is a roller coaster ride, both physically and emotionally. I know there are women out there that are running 5 miles a day while pregnant, but I’m not going to compare myself to them. I feel like I’ve done the best I can. I’ve resisted many, many bad cravings. I’ve given in to a few. I’ve worked out, and I haven’t. It’s all part of being human. And I’ve never claimed to be Wonder Woman. (Although I wouldn’t mind having her hot boots and supernatural capabilities. Ha ha!)

STATE OF THE BLOG

So, to switch topics here, I’ve been thinking about this little blog a lot lately. I know that I don’t update as often as I used to, and I do wonder how I’m going to write at all with a full-time job, a newborn and other duties of life going on. I’ve considered giving it up completely a few times, but then I go back to my first blog entry almost a year ago (July 29 is my blogiversary!), and I remember how excited I was to have an outlet to express how I was feeling through trying to lose weight. How encouraged I was when I received my first comment, and how humbled I was when people I never met before were supporting me (and still do!) like my own friends and family.

I may not have a million readers. I don’t have companies banging down my door to promo products on my site. I haven’t had a giveaway (yet). But I have made some wonderful friends and gained so much joy through my blogging experience. So for that, I thank you, and I will do my best to keep Two Pounds a Week afloat. I want more than ever to get to my goal weight, and be a healthy role model for my daughter, so I definitely need all the support I can get!

Work in progress

July 6th, 2010

Hello, hello! Hope you all had a fantastic 4th o’ July weekend! Along with eating some great food, spending time with our families and shooting a few fireworks, JD and I spent the good part of our three days off getting stuff done in the girl’s nursery. My brother-in-law is an amazing painter, and offered to do the room for the low cost of a BBQ lunch. What a steal, right? So he and my sis — plus my nieces — came over Saturday to paint and hang out. Sarah brought over a huge bin of 0-3 month clothes, so we “awwed” our way through those, and I started the big job of washing everything, plus cutting tags off and laundering her new outfits. I think it was at least 5 loads, and I’m not even done yet! We are having two showers at the end of the month too, so I’m sure more dresses, onesies and footed PJ’s are on the way. She’ll be one well-dressed baby. :)

Did you get a sneak peak at the wall color in the picture? I absolutely love it. It goes beautifully with her bedding, and Terry did such a good job painting. There wasn’t a streak or bubble in sight.

I couldn’t get the best pictures since I didn’t have any natural light, but here’s another picture of the wall color. I’ll have to take some better ones in the daytime. I am absolutely in love with the birdhouse hanging in the corner! We are ordering a wall mural of a tree with birds flying around, and we thought this piece would be so cute with it.

We got the crib bedding washed and put on too. The toys and stuffed animals wanted to crash here for awhile until we find them a new pad. Ha ha!

I wish I could show you the wall art we made for her and hung over the changing table, but since it has her name on it, I’ll have to keep that piece a secret for a few more weeks. :)

The room is definitely a work in progress, but I’m so happy with the way it is turning out. I can’t wait to see it all finished!

It was back to work today, and the husband and I are exhausted after such a busy weekend. He fired up the grill for dinner, and I sauteed some fresh, organic spinach (good source of iron!) to go with our baja citrus chicken and sweet potato chips.

So good!

We took a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood after dinner. Tex was happy to get out and stretch his legs, as was his mom. :)

I’m off to finish cleaning up the kitchen and then it’s lights out for me. Hope you all have a great, healthy week!

Organic eats…and treats!

June 29th, 2010

Whew…am I full! The husband made us an awesome, fresh and mainly organic dinner tonight, and this preggo lapped up every bite. The stars of the show were more veggies from our garden. I am so pleased with how well our plants have done. It has definitely saved us a lot on our grocery bill, and you just can’t compare the taste of a tomato fresh from the vine to one from the grocery store. Forget about it!

We have been grilling a lot lately, mainly to keep the heat out of the house, and tonight was dubbed hot dog night. We saw organic, nitrate-free franks at Earth Fare and thought we’d try them out. Add an organic green salad with homegrown tomatoes and cucumbers, and an ear of our latest crop — corn! — and you’ve got an awesome, healthy summer meal.

What toppings do you like on your hot dogs? I love raw chopped onions on mine, plus organic ketchup and mustard. We bought some whole wheat buns at Earth Fare that are so delicious — soft and flavorful, and no artificial ingredients. I even ate one by itself with a salad last night for dinner. Ha ha!

I’ve been feeling so much better now that JD and I have been stocking up on more organic foods. I also cut out all artificial sweeteners when I found out I was pregnant, and I can definitely feel a huge difference. I rarely have headaches like I used to, and my skin looks and feels a lot healthier. No Diet Cokes in my future! :)

Speaking of drinks, I’ve been craving slushies like mad this past week. I did give in and get a lemon real fruit slush from Sonic, but then I thought about all the crap and sugar that’s in it, and decided to make my own. So into the blender went several handfuls of ice, some Simply Lemonade (made with all-natural ingredients) and a bag of these:

Plus the “meat” from half of this:

Blend

And down the hatch it goes! Real ingredients, and around 100 calories for an 8-ounce glass. JD REALLY  liked these…I think he polished off the rest of the mix within a day. Ha ha!

So what else? Well, I went to see my doctor yesterday, and I found out I’m slightly anemic. From what I understand, it’s pretty common in pregnancy because of the increased blood supply the baby needs. I have to get my iron count up by my 36th week of pregnancy (tomorrow I’m 32 weeks), or I have to start taking pills. So lots of dark, leafy greens, beans and a little more red meat will be incorporated into more of our meals. Even if that means turning on the stove. :)

I am so psyched that this weekend is a long one! My brother-in-law is going to paint the nursery for us Saturday, and Sunday, we’re having a 4th of July BBQ with our families. I still can’t believe the year is half over…and that I’m going to be a mom in 8 weeks!

Hope you all are having a great week! Do those of you celebrating the 4th have big plans?

Some like it (not) hot

June 23rd, 2010

I have the hardest time cooking in the summer when it is 100+ degrees outside. Can I get an amen from anyone else? I’ve been packing a lot of cold sandwiches, raw veggies, yogurt bowls and other cooler eats for breakfast and lunch. I did, however, turn the oven on one night this week to put our everlasting supply of zucchini to good use for dinner. The squash plants have pretty much fizzled out, but these bad boys just keep growing and growing. I think I actually gasped when I pulled these out of the plant bed. Yowza!

Reader Andrea left me an awesome zucchini recipe recently that I can’t wait to try. As soon as I get some bread crumbs and parmesan, I may just be cooking once again!

I was craving spaghetti Monday night, but didn’t feel like boiling noodles. So I decided roasted veggies would be the perfect base. I even cracked open a new pasta sauce I got from EarthFare (the best store in the world. I’m so in love.) It had all-natural ingredients, and no high fructose corn syrup. I really liked this marinara!

I browned some lean, organic turkey with onion and added it to the sauce. Plus a few shakes of oregano and basil.

And scooped some over zucchini and squash straight from the oven.

Sprinkled with some organic cheddar. So good, and even better the next day at lunch!

I couldn’t bring myself to heat up the house again, so the past two nights, I’ve made my go-to staple — organic eggs. Only a couple of minutes on the stove, and dinner is served.

With whole wheat toast frosted with a little bit of cream cheese and organic strawberry conserves. Plus, more veggies from our garden:

Cucumbers with a dollop of ranch for dipping

I guess this may be a strange combo, but it sure was delicious. And my air conditioning isn’t about to have a stroke. :)

My sweet husband is on his way home as we speak from DC, so I’m going to spruce the house — and myself — up a bit before he gets here. Hope you all are having a great week, and are staying cool.

P.S. — I’m 31 weeks today — only 9 more to go!

The final countdown

June 16th, 2010

I’d just like to start this post out by saying SORRY for not updating over the weekend like I said I was going to! It truly has been a crazy, hectic few weeks.

With my due date only 10 short weeks away, the husband and I are full speed ahead on the baby train, and have been spending most all of our time preparing for our little girl’s arrival. In just the past few days alone, we:

Attended our first prepared childbirth class, and a 2-hour breastfeeding workshop. And no, I did not have to drag JD there. Ha ha! He even piped up and asked the instructor a couple of questions. I have already gotten so much out of these sessions, and it’s nice to be around other couples going through the same experiences. The prepared childbirth class has eased a lot of the anxiety I have about labor & delivery, and truly made me think about and research more on how I want my experience to be (that is, if I have a regular delivery and no complications). I never thought I’d EVER say this, but I’m even considering going all natural. I’m not writing “NO EPIDURAL” in my birth plan just yet, but it’s definitely something I’m giving a lot of thought about. Being a first-timer here, I don’t want to have too many plans or expectations and then get stressed/upset out if I – or my medical team — decide to go another route. My sister had to have an emergency C-section with her first baby, so sometimes, you just never know what could happen. We have four more sessions in our prepared childbirth class, so the more informed I become, the better.

Had our 4D ultrasound. Our baby girl was very active during the ultrasound, so the doctor couldn’t get a whole lot of good shots of her. He did get this pic of her sweet face…I absolutely love those cheeks!

She looks a lot like her daddy already!

I also got my Rhogam* shot, which was no big deal. I was told horror stories that this thing would be like a machete in the hip, but honestly, I didn’t even know the nurse put the needle in. I felt so silly holding my husband’s hand and bracing for the worst! :)
*In case you are wondering, I’m Rh Negative, so I had to get the shot to protect the baby and any future babies from developing antibodies to my blood if they have a positive blood type.

Got baby girl’s bedding and picked out a color for the nursery. Since my family nickname is “baby bird,” JD and I decided that would be a good theme for the girl’s room. I found the perfect bedding online, and my sweet mother in law bought it for us a few weeks ago. It came in, and I absolutely love it! It’s still in the box waiting to be washed, but here’s a pic of it if you want to check it out.

The bedding has a beautiful shade of green in it, which we matched at Home Depot for our paint color. We are still deciding what’s going on the walls, but I know an 11×14 of this will be:

So, are some of you still awake after all this pregnancy talk? :) I actually don’t have a lot of news on the exercise and food front, since this baby seems to be the only thing I can think about these days. But I can say that I’m eating well for the most part (I did indulge in a pizza craving over the weekend while out with friends) and exercising when I can and feel up to it.

It is getting a lot harder to get through workouts with extra weight on, being exhausted, swelling like a sausage, etc., but I actually think I’ve done a pretty good job exercising throughout this pregnancy. We don’t have any errands or classes tonight, surprisingly, so I’m going to do Summer Sanders Prenatal Workout when I get home. I really love the light cardio and strength training combo in this DVD. Maybe all those labor lunges will actually help me through labor! :)

Lastly, and I can never say this enough, I would like to say a big thanks to all of you who have kept up with my blog and encouraged me throughout this pregnancy. I’m definitely going to need that support when it comes time to take the baby weight off! And I’m so inspired to lose those pounds – plus some – after reading about the awesome things my friends and blogger friends are doing to achieve a healthier lifestyle. You all are amazing!!

Have a fantastic rest of the week!

The Verdict

June 10th, 2010

Just wanted to write a quick note to say I heard from my doctor yesterday, and all my blood work from my second glucose test came back normal!  Whoo Hoo — no gestational diabetes! Thanks to all those who sent well wishes and prayers…I truly appreciate it.

Up next for this mom-to-be…baby classes (starting tonight!), a Rhogam shot (ouch) and best of all — a 4D ultrasound on Monday. I can’t wait to see my sweet girl’s face!

Be back sometime this weekend with a longer post…hope you all are having a fantastic week!

Sugar strike

June 6th, 2010

Wow. The end of the weekend already? Mondays come way too soon sometimes. The husband and I had a pretty uneventful weekend, which was nice considering the next few months are going to be so busy. We did find the last piece of furniture for our baby’s nursery — a two-shelf cherry wood bookcase. It goes perfectly with the rest of the room, and we spent some time Saturday filling it with our childhood books, plus a few new ones we’ve bought for her over the past few months. One of my favorites is “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” I must have asked my parents to read that to me a million times! I hope she does the same. :) Now we just need some paint on the walls, a few pictures hung and we’ll be ready to go. I’ll share some photos when we get a little further along in our room project.

Getting the baby’s room ready was good therapy, since the past few days have been kind of tough for me. I had a glucose tolerance test on Wednesday, which is standard at 28 weeks of pregnancy. Basically, you gulp down a sugary drink, sit there for an hour and then get your blood drawn to make sure your glucose levels are normal. Well, I found out Friday mine came out abnormal, so tomorrow morning, I have to go in for a follow-up 3-hour test. The nurse said it is very common, could be a fluke, but they want to make sure I don’t have gestational diabetes. I have to say I was really surprised by it all, especially considering I eat right the majority of the time and make sure to get in exercise. But there are many factors, (family history, age, etc.) that can contribute to gestational diabetes, and luckily, it usually goes away after pregnancy. Of course my main concern is for the baby’s health and safety, and whatever the outcome of this test tomorrow, I know I will do whatever the doctor tells me to do to ensure she will be just fine. Stand on my head, eat bugs, whatever.

I’ve been keeping a keen eye on sugar grams and carbs in my meals the past couple days, and tried to make them more protein dense. Plus, I’ve swapped veggies for organic granola bars and things like that. Here’s a sampling of some of my eats:

Scrambled organic, cage-free eggs and nitrate-free turkey bacon. I got the bacon at Earthfare, and it is by far the best turkey variety I’ve had. And only 35 calories a slice!

Sesame tempeh slices on whole wheat bread, a spread of cream cheese and cucumber slices fresh from our garden. I really enjoyed this one. It reminded me of a sushi roll (mmm…sushi rolls….). Served on the side was mixed salad greens with a splash of vinaigrette.

I’m currently noshing on a turkey burger, with a side of organic baby carrots and a couple of tablespoons of garlic hummus. Yom, yom, yom. I stuck a Chobani yogurt in the freezer earlier today, so I may be able to have a little sweet treat after all. :) I’ve had several great sweat sessions on the elliptical, (even an early morning workout…whoah!) plus long walks and a little strength training. And of course a nap or two for good balance. Ha ha! Hopefully all my good efforts will help. Fingers and toes are crossed for a normal test tomorrow.

Hope you all had a terrific weekend!
